From Kansai Airport to Osaka
Kansai International (KIX) sits on an island in Osaka Bay, about 50 km from downtown. Here is how to get into the city - and how to sort out your yen on the way.
Nankai Rapi:t train
All-reserved airport express straight to Namba, about every 30 minutes.
Airport limousine bus
No transfers - straight to Osaka Station (Umeda) from right outside arrivals.
Taxi
Door to door. Fixed-fare airport taxis can be booked in advance.
By train - Nankai Rapi:t
- Follow the "Railways" signs from arrivals. The station is a short covered walk from Terminal 1 (from Terminal 2, take the free shuttle bus first).
- The station has two sides: Nankai (for Namba) and JR. For downtown Osaka's Namba district, take the Nankai side - buy at the counter or machines (English menus), or book ticketless online for ¥150 off the express fee.
- Every Rapi:t seat is reserved, so once you're aboard, relax - Namba station connects directly to the subway and is walking distance from Dotonbori.
- No rush? The Nankai Airport Express on the same line costs just ¥970 with no surcharge and takes 45-50 minutes, about every 15 minutes.
Heading to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka or the Shinkansen instead? Take the JR side: the Haruka express (Tennoji ¥1,820, ~35 min; Shin-Osaka ¥2,540, ~50 min, non-reserved) - or buy the discounted HARUKA One-way Ticket online in advance if you're visiting from abroad (Tennoji ¥1,300 / Osaka & Shin-Osaka ¥1,800).

- Buy a ticket at the machines or counters near arrivals, or pay on board - cash and IC cards are accepted.
- Buses leave from the stops directly outside both terminals - no stairs, no transfers.
- Routes also serve Namba (OCAT), Uehommachi, Kobe and Kyoto - if your hotel is near a stop, you can ride straight to the door.
Slower than the Rapi:t but the easiest option with big suitcases, and the only one-seat ride to Umeda. Allow extra time in evening traffic.
Airport limousine bus (official, English)By taxi
About 60 minutes to downtown, typically ¥20,000 or more. Fixed-fare airport taxis and app dispatch (GO app) are available. Practical for groups of 3-4 with luggage, or after the last trains (around midnight).
Money - exchange & ATMs at the airport
Currency exchange counters
Located in both terminals around arrivals. Convenient, but rates include a margin - exchange only what you need right away.
ATMs - usually the better deal
Seven Bank ATMs in Terminal 1 run 24 hours and accept foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay and more, with English menus. Withdrawing yen here usually beats the counter rates.
How much cash do you need?
In Osaka, cards and contactless payment work at hotels, department stores and most restaurants. Keep ¥10,000-20,000 in cash for street food stalls, shrines, markets and small izakaya.

- IC card: buy an ICOCA at the station - it works on trains, subways, buses and at convenience stores across Japan.
- Visiting from abroad? Discounted Rapi:t and HARUKA tickets are sold online in advance - buy before you fly.
- Free Wi-Fi covers the whole airport, and SIM/eSIM counters are in the arrival lobbies.
